Frequently Asked Questions

At Lymphatic Therapy of Boulder County, we offer gentle therapies designed to support circulation, recovery, and nervous system balance. Below are answers to some of the most common questions about manual lymphatic drainage, lymphatic facials, and Celluma LED light therapy.

Lymphatic Therapy

What is manual lymphatic drainage (aka, lymphatic therapy)?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a gentle hands-on therapy that supports the movement of lymphatic fluid through the body. The technique uses slow, rhythmic movements that encourage lymphatic fluid movement, helping the body process excess fluid, metabolic waste, and inflammatory byproducts.

What does lymphatic therapy help with?

Manual lymphatic drainage helps with: • swelling and fluid retention • post-surgical recovery • inflammation • immune system function • circulation • relaxation of the nervous system

Is lymphatic therapy the same as massage?

No. While traditional massage focuses on muscles and deeper pressure, lymphatic drainage uses very light, precise movements that work specifically with the lymphatic vessels just beneath the surface of the skin.

How often should I receive lymphatic therapy?

Frequency depends on individual goals. Some clients schedule weekly sessions during recovery from surgery or illness, while others incorporate monthly lymphatic drainage into their regular wellness routine.

What does lymphatic therapy feel like? Does it hurt?

Lymphatic therapy is not painful. Manual lymphatic drainage is a very gentle technique, using gentle, rhythmic skin stretching to support lymphatic circulation. It is very different from massage. Most clients find lymphatic drainage to be deeply relaxing, feeling calm and at ease during their session.

How will I feel after receiving lymphatic therapy?

Most clients feel deeply relaxed after a session. Some notice reduced swelling, improved comfort, or a general sense of lightness in the body. Because lymphatic drainage supports fluid movement and circulation, responses can vary depending on the individual and their current needs.

Will I see results after my first session?

Many clients notice changes after their first session, such as reduced swelling, improved comfort, or a sense of relaxation. However, the number of sessions needed will vary depending on individual goals, the body’s healing process, severity of symptoms, and the specific concern(s) being addressed.

What should I do after my first session?

After a session, gentle movement or relaxation, and staying well hydrated, will help support lymphatic circulation. Many clients choose to take the rest of the day at a relaxed pace to allow the body to continue processing fluid movement and circulation.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Clients are welcome to wear comfortable clothing to their appointment. Depending on the area being treated, some sessions may involve draping similar to traditional massage therapy, while others may be performed with clients remaining partially clothed. Your therapist will guide you so you feel comfortable throughout the session.

Lymphatic Therapy After Surgery

How can lymphatic therapy help me after getting surgery?

Surgery places extra demand on the lymphatic system as the body heals and clears excess fluid, inflammation, and cellular waste. Gentle lymphatic therapy can help support this natural healing process by encouraging healthy fluid movement, easing swelling and discomfort, and supporting mobility and healthy scar tissue formation as the body repairs itself. Many clients also find sessions deeply calming for the nervous system during what can be a physically and emotionally stressful recovery period. Treatments are always customized to your procedure, stage of healing, and comfort level, while following your surgeon’s recommendations.

How soon can I start lymphatic therapy after surgery?

Many clients begin lymphatic drainage within 1-2 weeks after surgery, depending on their surgeon’s recommendations. Early sessions can help support lymphatic movement, circulation, and reduce swelling during recovery.

Which surgeries can benefit from lymphatic therapy as a recovery strategy?

Lymphatic drainage is commonly used after procedures such as: • orthopedic surgeries • C-sections • abdominal surgeries (including hernia surgeries) • oral surgeries • liposuction • tummy tuck • breast augmentation or reduction • facial procedures • body contouring procedures

Is lymphatic therapy painful?

No. Post-surgical lymphatic drainage uses extremely gentle techniques designed to support healing tissues and encourage fluid movement without causing discomfort.

Lymphatic Facials

What is a lymphatic facial?

A lymphatic facial uses manual lymphatic drainage techniques to support lymphatic circulation in the face and neck. The treatment helps encourage fluid movement, reduce puffiness, and promote a refreshed appearance.

How is a lymphatic facial different than a traditional facial?

Traditional facials often focus on skincare products and exfoliation, while lymphatic facials focus on supporting lymphatic circulation and fluid movement through gentle manual techniques.

Light Therapy

What is Celluma LED light therapy?

Our clinic uses the Celluma PRO LED Light Therapy Device, a professional LED light therapy device designed to support circulation, tissue recovery, and skin health. The device delivers therapeutic wavelengths of light that interact with the body’s cells and may support natural healing processes.

What does red light therapy help with?

Light therapy supports: • circulation • inflammation reduction • tissue recovery • skin health and collagen support • relaxation

Can LED light therapy be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Many clients combine LED light therapy with manual lymphatic drainage, craniosacral therapy, or lymphatic facial treatments to support circulation and relaxation.
